“Ecopsychology proceeds from the assumption that at its deepest level the psyche remains sympathetically bonded to the earth that mothered us into existence” Theodore Roszak.
In addition to long term therapy, I also offer short term ecotherapy.
This would suit you if you would like to focus on a single issue in your life, such as a recurring and painful relationship challenge, life transitions, work-place stress, or caring roles for example.
We would work out in nature, re-awakening a relationship with the natural world, working with her as symbol, inspiration, a grounding tool and a provider of a safe and connected space.
These can be powerful sessions during which I use a wide range of different approaches that bring insight, offering specific tools to support you. These outdoor sessions are 90 minutes long as opposed to the normal 50 minute sessions for indoor therapy.
The natural world can be a beautiful “co-therapist”, cutting through the noise of our daily, fast-paced lives. It can foster a sense of connection, an opportunity for creativity and for the emergence of possibility. Throughout all my work, I offer an entirerly non-judgemental space. The natural world also lacks any judgments or expectations and this can enhance your feelings of safety and belonging.
As Theodore Roszak said:
“Once upon a time all psychologies were “ecopsychologies”. Those who sought to heal the soul took for granted that human nature is densely embedded in the world we share with animal, vegetable, and mineral, and all the unseen powers of the cosmos…. it is psychiatry of modern western society that has split the “inner life” form the “outer world” – as if what was inside of us was not also inside the universe, something real, consequential and inseparable form our study of the natural world”
I use many different approaches to help deepen our inquiry into what is currently challenging you, including mindfulness and breathwork, CBT, short term depth psychotherapy, visualisations, working with the elements and many other tools to support reflective exploration. All the while, we use the natural world around us to help enrich the work and offer a deeper meaning to your life and the issues you are facing.
If this is of interest, please get in touch via email. We would then have a short chat on the phone so I can understand what you’d like to work on, and you can find out more about how the process works. If we agree to explore this work together further, I would then invite you to a 50 minute face to face session at my consulting room in Twickenham. This gives you a chance to ask more questions about this way of working, and gives us both more time to explore whether it feels the right path for you.
Once we have agreed that this is the right direction for you, our next 6 sessions would be outside. I work in Richmond Park, at a specific location and would give you more details when we speak.
I tend to work in all weather, other than storms, high winds or incessant rain – that can be tiring! So being appropriately dressed will be vital.
Our work would be weekly unless bad weather gets in the way.
“Was somebody asking to see the soul?
See your own shape and countenance, persons, substances, beasts, the trees, the running rivers, the rocks and sands”
Walt Whitman
